How Often Should You Really Have Your Hair Coloured?
Hair Colour Advice in Hazlemere
Quick Takeaways
Root touch-ups: usually every 4–8 weeks.
Balayage and blended colour: often every 4–6 months when created and maintained well.
Your ideal schedule depends on your colour, natural regrowth and hair condition.
Regular trims every 6–12 weeks can also help keep coloured hair looking healthy.

How Often Should You Really Have Your Hair Coloured?
Four weeks? Eight weeks? Six months?
The answer depends entirely on the colour you have.
At The Cutting Studio High Wycombe, we don't believe every client needs to sit in the salon chair every four weeks. In fact, a well-planned colour should work with your hair, your lifestyle and the amount of maintenance you actually want.
However, leaving certain colours for too long can make your next appointment more complicated. So, when should you come back?
Root Touch-Ups: Around Every 4–8 Weeks
If you colour your roots to cover greys or maintain a noticeable colour change, we generally recommend a root touch-up every four to eight weeks.
Your natural growth rate and the contrast between your natural and coloured hair will influence exactly how soon you'll notice your roots.
Keeping on top of your appointments also means we can maintain your colour rather than having to correct larger areas of regrowth later.
Balayage & Blended Colour: Around Every 4–6 Months
Prefer something lower maintenance? This is where balayage and beautifully blended colour really come into their own.
When we create the colour correctly, it should grow out softly rather than leaving you with an obvious line of regrowth.
For many clients, that means a larger balayage or blending appointment may only be necessary around every four to six months.
You may still choose to visit us between appointments for toning, glossing, conditioning or a trim to keep everything looking fresh.
What About Highlights?
Highlights vary because there are so many ways to create them.
A bright blonde taken close to the root will generally need more regular maintenance than softer, lived-in highlights or face-framing colour.
This is why your consultation matters. Tell us how often you realistically want to visit the salon and we can create a colour plan around you.
Don't Forget About the Condition of Your Hair
Great colour isn't only about the colour itself.
Regular trims, professional products and treatments can make a huge difference to how your hair looks and feels. As a general guide, a trim every six to twelve weeks can help keep the ends looking fuller and healthier.
If you use heated tools regularly, heat protection matters too. Meanwhile, using the right shampoo, conditioner and treatments can help protect your colour between appointments.
Low-Maintenance Hair Colour Doesn't Mean No Maintenance
We love low-maintenance colour. However, there's an important difference between low maintenance and no maintenance.
Balayage may allow you to leave longer between major colour appointments, while root colour usually requires more frequent visits.
Rather than following a generic timetable, we'll tell you what your hair needs.
