What to Expect During Your Consultation - Realistic, Honest Advice

Your stylist will start by asking a few important questions to get to know your hair and preferences:

Honesty is at the heart of our consultation process - from you and us. We'll always be transparent about what's achievable based on your hair's condition and history. If your hair has been previously coloured, especially with box dyes or henna, it can affect the results of any new colour service, so it's important for us to know your hair history. Thinking of going from brunette to blonde? That kind of transformation often takes several sessions to ensure your hair stays healthy throughout the process. If your hair is dry, brittle, or damaged, you might also need a course of deep conditioning treatments before we can achieve your desired look.

Strand Test

A strand test is particularly important for clients with previously coloured or chemically treated hair and involves applying a small amount of colour to a hidden section of your hair. This allows us to:

*Ensure your hair remains healthy throughout the colouring process

Elasticity Test

Healthy hair has natural stretch and bounce. During an elasticity test, your stylist gently stretches a single strand of damp hair to see how well it returns to its original shape. This helps us assess:

*Whether your hair can safely undergo colouring or lightening
*If treatments are needed beforehand (e.g., strengthening masks or bond-builders like Wellaplex)

Porosity Test

Professional Advice & Aftercare

After your consultation, your stylist will clearly explain the recommended colour service or combination of services best suited to your hair and goals. They will also advise if any pre-colour treatments are needed to prepare your hair and ensure the best possible results. If your desired look requires more than one appointment, your stylist will outline how many sessions may be necessary to achieve it safely. Finally, you’ll receive personalised home care advice and product recommendations to help maintain the health and vibrancy of your new colour.

Using the right products is often essential, especially when working toward a particular colour or style.

Skin Testing

If you are new to hair colour or have not had your hair coloured at The Cutting Studio in Hazlemere for six months or more, you will need to come in for a quick skin test 48 hours prior to your appointment.

Our skin testing procedure is essential to ensure you do not have any adverse reaction to the chemicals in your hair colour.  No appointment is necessary for the skin testing - simply pop in and we will dab some hair colour discreetly on your arm.  If you experience any discomfort please gently clean the area with warm water and let us know.  

Reactions to hair colourant are rare but people can develop hypersensitivities or allergies at any stage in their lives.  Certain medications can also make you more sensitive to hair colour ingredients.
