Hair Shedding vs Breakage
In this article, our hairdressing experts explain the difference between hair breakage and hair shedding. We understand that hair loss and damaged hair can be a sensitive subject. Everyone’s hair sheds naturally every single day as part of the hair growth cycle. So, it is completely normal to see some hairs in your brush after brushing your hair or stray hairs circling around the drain after a shower. In fact, a healthy person should expect to shed up to 100 hairs every day! Around 85-95% of the hairs on your head are currently in the active growing stage, called the anagen phase. The rest of the 10-15% of the hairs are in the resting stage, called the telogen phase.
Hair breakage is different in the fact that it can be caused by every day wear and tear! Over using heated styling tools such as hair dryers or straightening irons can weaken the hair shaft and lead to unwanted split ends. Tight buns and pony tails can exacerbate hair shedding & breakage. Take good care of your hair and scalp with regular haircuts and conditioning treatments at our Hazlemere salon. Boost moisture at home to prevent hair breakage - by simply conditioning your hair with each wash, you can help fight the effects of breakage. Try letting your hair dry naturally sometimes to spare your tresses from too much high heat!
If you are experiencing excessive hair shedding which is resulting in hair loss or thinning hair, the stylists at The Cutting Studio recommend visiting a trichologist who can help you understand what is happening with your hair.
Hair Care Treatments
Next time you’re at the salon, ask for a moisture boost while you’re at the backwash. Paul Mitchell KeraTriplex with Awapuhi Wild Ginger is a 2-step treatment that is sure to work wonders. Keratin protein is absorbed into the hair, and reinforces weak areas to reverse breakage.
- Reduces breakage by 80%
- Boost shine by 35%
- Prevents color fade by 67%

Menopausal Hair Loss
Research suggests that around 50% of women will suffer from hair loss or thinning during the menopause. There is no quick fix to combatting menopausal hair loss, but there are steps you can take to promote hair growth and alleviate your symptoms.
Exercise is key: Keep moving and your blood pumping, strengthen your muscles and lift your mood!
Food: A healthy balanced diet that includes lots of fruit, vegetables and unprocessed foods can help.
Drink plenty of water: Your body needs to be well hydrated to function properly.
Go easy on your hair: Be mindful of how often you use heated styling, tight hair bands and buns.
Add Volume With Extensions
Hair extensions are a great way to transform your hair by adding volume, length and colour. We offer Beauty Works Hair Extensions at our High Wycombe salon that are renowned for creating natural-looking extensions that are super high quality and custom made to fit you perfectly.
